A comprehensive scheme of ocean terminals at Halifax for the Trans- continental Railways was approved by the Dominion Government in 1912, and the work was commenced in 1914. The scheme provides for the construction along the western shore of Halifax Harbour, and to the south of the city, of a bulkhead passenger landing quay 2,006 ft. in length of five piers and six basins. each of which will be 1,250 ft. in length, and for a breakwater at the southern end 1,250 ft. in length. The inner ends only of the basins will
require dredging, auil they will be dredged so na to give a minimum depth of 45 ft. (L.W.0.8.T.). This minimum depth will also be provided at the bulkhead landing quay. The piers are each designed for four ships 600 ft. in length, two on each side, or for two ships each up to 1,200 ft. in length, one on each side. The whole terminal scheme, including equipment, railway alterations, &c., ia estimated to cost some 6,000,000L, and to take years to complete. When it is completed, several vessels of the dimensions suggested will be accommodated with ease.
It is proposed to deepen the ship channel between Montreal and Quebec to 35 ft. at lowest low water, and several miles of dredging to this depth has already been done at Lake St. Peter and other points. The cost of securing this depth along the whole of the dredged channel is estimated at
, and it is thought that the work will be com- pleted in years. It would be a rust undertaking to deepen further to 40 ft. at lowest low water, and no The Harbour Commissioners deepen
surveys have been made.

Ships of the dimensions suggested can already be accommodated at the breakwater.
As regards the channel,
The depth of water at the channel and berths could be deepened to 40 ft. (L.W.0.S.T.), and accom- modation provided for vessels of the other dimensions suggested, but at large expense. Already the rise of tide gives a depth of more than 4 ft. at less than half tide in the dredged channels, and at the quays.
No information is available as to the time or expenditure needed. For the improvements now in hand.
see answer to question 18.
The whole of the channel and the depth of water at the end of some of the wharves could be deepened to 40 ft. (T..W.0.5.T.), and accommoda- tion provided for ships of 100 ft. beam, but it is doubtful whether accommodation could be provided for ships 1,000 ft. in length owing to difficulties of turning in the barbour.
No details are available as to the probable cost of these improvements. The time needed to deepen to 40 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.) might be estimated at two years.

(b) in the case of en

berths-
would be involved as a result of these improve- ments?
Chute. Where detailed es
timates have not already been prepared only approximate flg. ures are desired.)
See answer to previous question.
See answer to previous question.
Extra charges for maintenance of a depth of 40 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.) would not be great xa the bottom in the vicinity of the wharves is of soft mud.
